Seeing spots

I keep seeing polka dotted things around lately and it got me thinking, why is it that they are specifically called 'polka dots'?

So I did a bit of research and found that the term 'polka dots' came around in the late 19th Century during the period when Polka music was popular, it was also at that time that spots were very fashionable, and naturally all the girls were turning up to go polka dancing in spotty dresses.

The two were linked and the term 'polka dots' was coined.

The term 'polka dots' spread and is still in use to this very day.

I thought that was such a cute little story worth sharing.

Svenska Design

I absolutely adore everything about Swedish home design! I love the simplicity, functionality and style (and all the beautiful white space) of it all.

The other day I came across a Swedish buyer named Tant Johanna who works for Elle Interiors in Sweden, based in Gothenburg. 

Now even though her blog is all in Swedish, it didn't stop me from enjoying all the pictures of gorgeous styling, things, places etc... that inspires her.

It was hard picking a few photos from her blog to show here, because they are all so pretty - but here are some of my favourite, favourites! :)

Dreaming...

Don't know why but I found myself looking at design jobs today... in London, of all places - it is my favourite city after all.

It got me thinking how I can't wait to finish studying and actually start earning for my designs, and where better to do that then in London town.

Found a few jobs that sound pretty peachy to me...

Glamour Girls

Pearl Frush

I just love 1940's / 1950's pin up girl illustrations.
I love the muted colours and soft almost fuzzy and dreamy illustrative style.

The girls are always ever so glamourous and gorgeous! I've come across a few artists whom I really fell for.

Pearl Frush

American Pearl Frush whom worked mainly in watercolours and gouache, she chose to portray more of the girl-next-door types in a soft and feminine way.

Earl Moran

Then there's Earl Moran who worked mainly in pastels and oils who chose to depict a much more sexy and racy woman.
He is famous for painting Marilyn Monroe in the 40's and for painting other sex symbols at the time.

You'll notice how most of his girls look so much like Marilyn! She must have been his muse.

Then there is my favourite, and he is one of the most famous pin up artists - Peruvian, Alberto Vargas.

His work is primarily in watercolour and air brushing, tending to depict either semi - nude or elegantly dressed women, most commonly with red painted nails

Alberto found fame when his work was repeatedly published in the US men's magazine Esquire, it was later dropped from the magazine for being too racy. Hugh Hefner then picked Vargas up and began including his pin ups in Playboy .

ASOS Heaven!

So i've been pretty busy lately and have not had much time for blogging, however I have somehow managed to find time for online shopping... at the expense of my poor little credit card. 

And this is one little gem, I thought was worth sharing! 

A friend recently asked me if I had heard of ASOS, to which I replied 'No I haven't' she swiftly instructed me to go and check it out ASAP as they not only offer a whole range of clothes, accessories, lingerie, nightwear, bags and shoes but at ASOS they do free delivery to Australia - no minimum purchase and you can choose to pay in a variety of currencies one of which is the Australian dollar! Check, Check, Check! 

So ASOS is said to be the UK's largest online retailer boasting over 35,000 items at any one time, those of well known UK labels like Mango and Oasis moving onto to labels like Juicy Couture, Karen Millen, Sass & Bide, Vero Moda and Kookai - as well as their very own ASOS line of clothes, shoes and beauty. 

Also worth mentioning they do a petite range for us small people as well as a maternity range and a plus size range.

I guess one of the benefits of shopping online at this site is, we here in Australia are in Winter when the northern hemisphere is in Summer, therefore a majority of ASOS's Winter clothes are on sale just when you need them. 

They have a range of photos of each product from a range of angles so you're not buying something from one dodgy dim lit picture. 

They also have a pretty reasonable returns policy, so should something be wrong you need not worry too much! 

I'll leave it to you to check it out for yourself and make your own mind up!
